Lightroom Beginners

Lightroom.png

Process your photos, and easily manage your growing library.

Lightroom has a become a key part of my photography workflow and to be honest, I’m not sure how I got by without it.

This one day Lightroom course is designed for beginners. I’ll walk you through the core aspects of Lightroom and guide you through the most common features. It’s a powerful program that is quite simple to use, once you understand some basic features.

What we’ll be covering on the day:

What is Lightroom? Ideas, concepts and benefits.

Workspace overview.

Organise. Import. Organise.

LR Catalogues.

Image processing. Global adjustment and editing tools.

Rating, starring, flagging and filters.

Smart folders & virtual copies.

Image export and management.

Watermarking.

Workflow presets.

I used to teach Photoshop and the main thing I realised during that time, was that most people didn’t need to know how to use photoshop at all. They needed to understand Lightroom.

Lightroom is faster, more intuitive and is specifically designed for image processing. Photoshop is a massive graphic design tool that can be confusing and counter intuitive to basic photo editing.

Each has its purpose, but they are very different.

When?

Saturday 13th October - 2018

Where?

We have an excellent space at, The Northern Design Centre - Gateshead

Time?

10:30 - 14:30 with a short break.

What do I need to bring with me?

Your laptop, with Lightroom installed. Any version from LR 4 up to LR Classic CC.

*Note - We wont be covering the new, cloud based, LR CC.

See the difference here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMSNcM7C0UE

You can subscribe to the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography Plan for about £10 per month. This includes Lightroom and Photoshop -  https://www.adobe.com/uk/creativecloud/photography.html

Make sure your laptop is fully charged. Power sockets may be limited, but remember to bring your charging cable too.

You’ll need a notepad and pen to take notes.

You will need a couple of folders of images on your hard drive, or on an external hard drive. Bring a memory card with images on too, as we'll be covering import and save features that you'll use most often.  I’ve found the most effective way to learn is to use your own images and computers. It’s a more familiar setup and we can get you organised, and up and running with your own version of LR from day one.

You are also welcome to attend without a laptop, and just take notes if that works for you.

There will be a maximum of 10 spaces per course.

Photography Basics

How the hell does this thing work?

The industry will have you believe that it’s only professionals who can use a camera in manual mode. The truth is, even as little as 40 years ago, the most amateur of photographer understood the basics of exposure.

It’s really not that complicated, and I personally believe that this is the foundation of becoming a better photographer. To understand exactly what your camera is doing, to understand its limitations and how to manipulate it for your own good is the first step on a journey of limitless possibilities.

To be tuned into your camera is to be tuned into your surroundings, and there will be more purpose behind the photographs that you make.

Basics is a one day event where we will cover camera operation and apply that to a photowalk. While walking we will talk about settings, looking at our surroundings and shooting manually. This is also your opportunity to ask questions and get real time feedback on issues that arise. There will be mistakes, many mistakes, which we will review over dinner and drinks at the end of the day.

The photographs we miss teach us to get the photographs we want.

There will be a maximum of 5 places per event to ensure you receive my full attention for the day.

Requirements - A camera with fully manual controls, yourself and a willingness to learn. This may sound stupid, but make sure your batteries are charged and you have a formatted memory card.

Price             -  £245.00 pp.

Where             - Newcastle upon Tyne

Times             - 09:30 - 17:00 approx

Next Date       - Monday 11th June 2018

If you are travelling from out of town, let me know and I'll forward you some accommodation info.

What is it?

A short 4 week course to set you on the path of shooting in manual. Take control of your camera, understand how it works, make better pictures.

Why?

It's common to be snapping away, and only every now and again getting a photograph that we are happy with. We've all been there, right?

It's amazing how just a simple understanding of how your camera works will help you to make more meaningful photographs, more often.

Who?

Do you have a DSLR, or a camera with manual settings, and want to get more out of it?

We'll look at each function and explain how it will affect your pictures.  It may sound complicated to start with, but like anything, practice make perfect.

So if you are in a confused state about aperture, shutter speed and ISO, come along and be part of the first Staithes photography course.

Where?

The course will run from Monday 6th August, 8pm - 9.30pm, for 4 weeks at the iconic Central Bar, Gateshead

This also means that we have access to some of the best beer and food in the area!

Check out their website - HERE

What do I need to bring?

Your camera, a notepad and pen, and a willingness to learn. It would probably beneficial to have an A4 folder to keep relevant information.
